Over the last 8 years, Barbara Meneely has read the
Berthoud Recorder newspaper to blind people.
Radio
Reading Service of the Rockies, now renamed Audio Information Network of Colorado,
was developed in 1990 by Executive Director, David Dawson. He created this source
for the visually impaired to receive news, TV guides, grocery advertisements,
obituaries and other necessary printed information.
AINC
programming is broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Statewide, AINC volunteers,
like Meneely, read almost 100 different regional newspapers. Her weekly program
airs on Mondays at 2:30 pm. Meneely admits, "I have people who are depending
on me!"
Listeners can tune in using
several different communication methods. The typical listener is assigned a radio
pre-tuned with available channels for listening to news read by volunteers. Meneely
attests to the ease and comfort of reading for AINC, "This gives me the leisure
of doing it from home."
AINC programs
can also be heard through stereo television by tuning into PBS's secondary audio
program. Rocky Mountain PBS is developing new digital radios for AINC. Live broadcasts
are heard toll free by telephone or on the internet at www.aincolorado.org. Programs
are aired in English and Spanish.
Additionally,
Meneely is the Board of Directors President for AINC. Kat Lindgren, Director of
Volunteer and Listener Services said, "Through her tireless proactive approach
to development and expectation of involvement, she has set the standard for board
participation." To become involved call: (877) 443-2001.
