Gary and Tom Disney with
CHAMPS (Children Having A More Positive Self-concept)by
Chris McCloskey
Gary Disney and his son, Tom, have experienced both the giving
and receiving ends of the CHAMPS mentoring program at Loma Linda Elementary School
in Longmont. CHAMPS (Children Having A More Positive Self-concept), is a volunteer
mentor project started by Sharon Thorvaldson and is associated with the St. Vrain
Education Foundation.
Eight years ago, after his mother's
death, Tom was recommended for the CHAMPS program to help him through the difficult
time. The resulting bond gradually grew into that of an extended family. In fact,
Tom's mentor and her husband eventually became Tom's Godparents. While this result
is unique, most CHAMPS students experience academic growth and friendship.
Gary
chose to become a CHAMPS mentor after retirement and has worked with the same
student for the last four years. Gary's CHAMPS partner has blossomed. Gary said,
"Just stressing things like the importance of reading has a big impact."
Tom,
now a senior at Longmont High School, recently selected the CHAMPS program as
his community service project. Tom said, "I have learned how to connect with
someone I had no ties with at first. It feels good to make a difference."
