Wayne Bauer
with Casa de la Esperanza
by Elle McPherson

A retired IBM engineer, Wayne Bauer has found a way to put his computer skills to good use: helping kids engineer LEGO robots. Bauer is a volunteer for Casa de la Esperanza, a program of Boulder County Housing Authority that provides housing for agricultural workers and their families in Longmont. As part of the program, the resident youth learn math and computer skills to ensure their success in school.

Last fall, Bauer helped the kids use the computer to program robots made out of LEGOs for the FIRST LEGO Robotics competition. The team got the Best Teamwork Trophy and moved on to the next level, despite it being their first time in the competition. Bauer also helps the kids with math and typing skills.

Says Carlota Loya Hernandez, Program Coordinator, "He is so authentic and genuinely loves to work with the kids; they know they can trust him, ask for his help and work well with him."

For Bauer, "It's a very enjoyable few hours a week". He loves helping the kids because they are very polite and ask lots of questions. He has also been inspired to start learning Spanish.

Bauer found the opportunity through Volunteer Connection's online database of available volunteer opportunities. He also volunteers with his wife as greeters at Longmont United Hospital and as a handyman for Association for Community Living.
