Betty Baal has volunteered for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for twelve years. She works approximately two hours a week, connecting with children who have been neglected or abused. However, at the beginning of a case, she puts in more hours, reviewing the files and becoming familiar with the needs of the child or children involved. She said, "I act upon the recommendation of the court-appointed guardian and keep an eye on the children to see that their needs are being met and that they are treated properly."
Baal is a retired elementary school nurse, but she wanted to maintain a connection with the children. Although CASA volunteers work with children of all ages, Baal usually works with young children and babies. Her main duty is to attend weekly visitations with her assigned child or children. In this capacity, she can meet during the day when it's more convenient for the young children and their caregivers. The meetings may take place in the home or at social services if the child is in foster care. Additionally, Baal attends court sessions to see if the parents are meeting the requirements of their treatment plans.
The best part of being a CASA volunteer
for Baal is her contact with the kids.
"I want to find the best possible
solutions for them. And I always work in a couple hugs." The most difficult
situations are those where she doesn't feel the needs of the children are being
met. Baal said, "In some cases, the child may end up going to an adoptive
home. Then I stop worrying because those children are so wanted just the way they
are."
Whatever the outcome, Baal explained, "It's good that we can be there for the children. Some of them are in very fragile situations."
Baal
also volunteers one morning a week at the Broomfield Senior Center.
